Sound recording for corporate, commercial and documentary production sometimes needs a different skill set in addition to what one knows about recording location sound. It requires the location sound mixer (and the whole crew, for that matter) to be part cheerleader, part coach and part therapist. Many times, the talent is someone who is not altogether media savvy. In those cases, it is the crew's job to make the person feel more relaxed in front of the camera, offer helpful hints (in a non-threatening way) to improve the person's delivery/believability and give them encouragement when they get a little frustrated. You do this in hopes that a) the client will end up with a product that is far above their expectations and b) the client will buy you a very nice lunch!
Sound recording for commercial production requires a multifaceted approach. It demands that a mixer analyze the sonic challenges for each project and know which type of microphone to use in any situation. It demands a spirit of cooperation with the director of photography to understand each shot in the commercial so that your boom mic doesn't make an unwanted guest appearance! It demands being observant of the key grip's activities so that your mic doesn't cast a shadow on a "perfect take". It demands communication with the director so that you know when and how to hide a lavaliere mic if necessary. It also demands sucking up to the location manager and the ad agency person for your next job!

This can range from a quarterly staff update to a special event to a global rollout of a new product or service. Producing these events can be extremely stressful with myriad moving parts.
